7 Best Pepper Jack Cheese Options

You’ve got to love a cheese with a first name. Sure “Asiago” sounds fancy, and “Cheddar” is synonymous with cash money. But when it comes to a cheese you can really get to know, it is preferable to be able to address it as “Jack.” Of course, Jack wears many hats. Sometimes, he’s hanging with Colby to create the marbled wonder we call Colby Jack. And sometimes, he’s flavored throughout with pepper flakes, and when that happens we call him pepper jack cheese.
Pepper jack cheese is a standout favorite among the plethora of cheeses one can choose. Its mild creamy taste and its semi-hard texture make the jack cheese the perfect vessel for bursts of peppery spice. A single slice of pepper jack cheese can do the improvement work to a sandwich that other cheeses can only achieve with the addition of horseradish sauce or some other, spicy, secondary ingredient.
In fact, if you’re like us, and you are perpetually harried about by the constant choices of the modern era, you probably choose pepper jack cheese because it narrows down your options for a sandwich. Pepper jack cheese kills two birds with one stone when it comes to sandwich construction, so it’s the logical choice.

How We Reviewed

We take cheese seriously. We know many of our readers reach for Jack due to its anti-headache properties and want to provide them with the highest quality cheese research. The distinct features, production notes, pros, cons, price points, and brand reputations were all taken into consideration when narrowing down and presenting this list.
Overall Price Range of This Product (and Similar Products)
The rarity and quality of the Jack cheese will greatly affect its price. However, on average you can expect to pay 50 to 60 cents per ounce of cheese.
What We Reviewed
- Important - Refrigerated items are perishable and tend to have short shelf lives - some of these can be as little as two weeks from the date of receipt - if you are ordering a large quantity, or are otherwise concerned about expiration dates, consider a frozen product.
Features
This is not our favorite pepper jack, but we did enjoy certain elements of this less expensive cheese option. Interestingly, Kraft is the only brand to enhance their peppers. They use acetic acid, instead of just regular old peppers. This leads us to believe acetic acid is the explanation behind the strange flavor.
The acid acts with an initial jolt of tart pepper like flavor, only to quickly dissipates into the regular old jack flavor. However, if you’re going to use this for an ingredient in a big dish, then it is probably fine.
Pros
Cons
- Famous Wisconsin Cheese
- no refrigeration required
- Creamy and Delicious
- Known Nationally
- Shelf Stable
Features
Self-proclaimed attributes of this pepper jack cheese include the “Famous” nature of the product, shelf stability, and no refrigeration required. Since these are not the qualities we really look for outside of a summer sausage (ironically consumed in winter for the most part – explain that one), we give this cheese a middle rating. The taste is good and real peppers were used, so the flavor is maintained throughout. Overall, the product is great for your next taco or burger night.
Pros
Cons
Features
Spicy, milky, and full flavored, this is up to par with every other Tillamook cheese we tried on our list. The brand never disappoints for a mid-range cheese with expensive flavor. If your budget is in a pinch, but you really love quality and quantity cheese, then this is the brand with which you can make a safe bet. Almost any variety of their cheese is above decent for the price. It’s not the best cheese you have ever had, but well worth your five bucks.
Pros
Cons
- One unit per order
- Contains: 6 - 0.67oz wedges per unit
- Product of USA

Pepper Jack fills a lot of different roles in the lives of cheese eaters. Some want it for slices on their sandwiches, others want it as the perfect pre-spiced nacho cheese. And some want a slice that will help refresh their guests’ palates when they present a charcuterie board. This cheese is for those fancy scenarios.
